The New Landscape of Cognitive Medicine
IBM recently released a cognitive, machine-based learning solution for the cloud known as IBM Watson that is set to empower the heroes of medical and facilitate solutions to modern day healthcare challenges.
This astounding technology has cross-functional applications within our healthcare system including Cancer Treatments, Drug Discovery, Social Program Management, Patient Care & even developments in Oncology and Genomics.
Partnered with the Barrow Neurological Institute for innovations in drug discovery for ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, Watson has already enabled medical researchers like Dr. Robert Bowser to uncover 5 new RNA binding proteins that are changed in patients with ALS.
Other partnerships with companies such as Pfizer, Novartis, Atrius Health and more have revealed the resounding truth that these are “products that can enhance and amplify human expertise.”
Saving Lives & Treating Disease
IBM has already begun to change the lives of people. In Oncology & Genomics, check out the inspirational story of Thomas “TJ” Richards and How Watson Helped in [His] Battle Against Lung Cancer.
Watson analyzed TJ’s medical history and recommended immunotherapy treatments fitted to his individual case and earned some brownie points by providing “supporting evidence like oncology guidelines, medical literature, clinical trials information, and more” to back up its scientific deductions.
For physicians involved in patient healthcare, an innovative medical nonprofit based out of Massachusetts known as Atrius Health uses IBM Watson as a catalyst to reduce wait times and speed up the proficiency of the 875 physicians on staff providing treatments to over 675,000 patients.
Atrius used the new solution to address challenges by integrating physician’s workflow in the electronic health record system and utilize comprehensive analytics and insights to close the gaps in the patient-doctor decision making process.
As the oldest players in the technology world, IBM continues to standardize our world using the mountains of digitalized information to outshine the out-dated processes of a far too critical and fundamental piece of the future of the human race.
So, How Exactly Does It Work?
Watson uses language, conversation, speech, vision and data insight APIs to add cognitive functionality to your application or service. To put simply, Paul Tang, MD, MS, and Chief Health Transformation Officer for IBM Watson Health says:
“Watson’s natural language processing can read and understand clinical notes in the electronic health record. When combined with analytics and other advanced technologies, it is then possible to extract critical insights about an individual’s health and responses to interventions. Armed with comprehensive information about the individual, and insights about the outcomes of similar people, physicians will be in a better position to personalize the care plan for each person.”
Your Mission Should You Choose to Accept it…
The job of a sales rep is the same of that accomplished by IBM Watson Health. Your job is to understand physician processes, their relationships with their patients, and to ultimately present your product within a portfolio of solutions to solve their various problems.
New Products, New Processes, New Technology. Are you ready to attack the playing field in the face of a this new technological shift in healthcare?
The first step is training your salesforce to understand what’s out there and how it compliments your product offering.
